Find out which trends you need in your life this season & shop my top picks.
Shopping for spring and summer is always so fun– the options are endless, especially compared to wintertime shopping when it feels like all I’m buying is sweaters. To help you hone in on the pieces that will have you looking on point this season, I’m breaking down my favorite current trends in this two-part guide.

Beach Riot, Lush, Charlotte Russe, By The Way
Tie-front styles are taking over, and I’m here for it! Tops, dresses, rompers, and jumpsuits featuring a tie-front detail are perfect for the summer and make for such a fun, eye-catching detail. Plus, they accentuate your chest, regardless of your size– and there’s no shame in my game for admitting that I enjoy showing a bit of cleavage on occasion. My favorite tie-front styles feature a tie detail which sits a bit higher on the chest to help cover up your bra, but I also love a plunging neckline with a lower tie, too (if you can go bra-less).
Hat Attack, J.Crew, Sam Edelman, Free People
You may think you’re set for summertime with a straw hat, but 2017 is all about the straw bag. At first, it seemed like Instagram and the blogosphere was being taken over by this structured bamboo bag from Cult Gaia, but the trend continued to evolve into more accessible woven wicker or straw handbags.
I’m kicking myself for not having picked up an authentic straw bag from the marketplaces in Ibiza (where they’re super popular) when I was there a couple of years ago; if any of you are vacationing in Europe or Mexico this summer, definitely put a straw tote bag at the top of your souvenir list because nothing beats authenticity like that. I love buying accessories when I travel to other countries because there are always great memories attached to the items– plus, no one back home will own the same thing. ?
If you aren’t traveling anywhere this summer, no worries– the above bag options all have an authentic look and are so chic. The key to owning this trend is choosing a bag with a defined shape, rather than a floppy style. Circular shapes have a particularly modern look to them, whether it’s the actual bag or in the form of rounded handles. Pom pom detailing can also make for a cute additional touch.
Amuse Society, Adidas, Jeffrey Campbell Mules, Jeffrey Cambell Footbed Sandals
“Put some spotlight on the slide…” ♫
Calvin Harris and Frank Ocean were talking about something totally different in their hit song, but little did they know how relevant this would be to this season’s major footwear trend. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: slides are the shoe of the summer. Whether it’s flat slide sandals or block-heeled mules, this trend is both stylish and functional– who doesn’t prefer being able to slip shoes on and off quickly and easily? There are so many great options out there, but above I’ve rounded up some of my favorites which are all under $100!
The first pair of slides above is a collaboration between two brands I adore: Amuse Society and Matisse. I love the tan suede coloring of these sandals because the neutral hue goes with just about anything (they come in black, too!), and the tassel detail is on point. Speaking of color, I’m obsessing over the pale mint green shade of the Adidas slides, which are far from basic; they would look just as great on the street as they would at the pool. You can’t go wrong with a classic black mule, and the heel height of the next pair is versatile enough to wear day or night. Finally, because I’m a fan of being comfortable, I had to include a footbed sandal– but with a stylish twist. This pair is way cuter than your average Birkenstock style, with a knotted suede upper in a beautiful dusty rose color.
Frankie’s Bikinis, Made by Dawn, Blue Life, Billabong, Boys & Arrows
Ribbed swim is so in. There’s something about ribbed material that just looks so luxe on the beach or by the pool! Brands like Frankie’s Bikini’s, Made By Dawn (both shown above), and the Minimale Animale have even come out with entire collections of all ribbed bikinis, and I’m fully obsessed.
When it comes to swimwear, I generally like investing in higher quality suits that are (unfortunately) on the more expensive side. It’s kind of ridiculous how pricey good swimwear has gotten (around $200 for a top and bottom combo– ugh), but I do feel that they hold up better over the long term. And while it may sound silly, knowing I’m wearing a brand whose vibe I’m into gives me an extra confidence boost– something I don’t think anyone would oppose to when you’re baring your bod beachside. However, if you’re on a budget, I’ve noticed plenty of ribbed styles at PacSun that are super affordable.
Let me know if you’ll be trying out any of these trends, and stay tuned for part two of this trend guide!
